HIPAA OCR
The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has been given responsibility for implementing and enforcing the privacy regulations of HIPAA.
Under HIPAA, OCR is given the power to investigate complaints and impose fines and penalties for violations of the HIPAA privacy standards. The Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 was passed to protect an individual’s rights to privacy relating to healthcare matters, including the sharing of personal medical data via Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).
